Aperture to Keynote Slideshow

Here's a workflow that will export images from Aperture into an existing Keynote presentation. A new slide will be created for each exported image and optionally, you can use the values from specified IPTC and EXIF metadata tags as the presenter's notes for each newly created slide.

Before you begin creating the workflow, download and install the Keynote Action Pack. This Action Pack contains actions for Keynote 3 and will provide the ability to create slides from the exported Aperture images.

STEP 01 - Identify the Image Versions

Most Aperture workflows begin with identifying the image versions that will be used in the workflow. There are four "starter actions" that will return references to a specific set of images: Choose Projects, Choose Albums, Find Aperture Items, and Get Selected Images. For this example, we'll determine the images by selecting them in the Aperture window.

Click on the Aperture application library in the Library list and then add the Get Selected Images action to the workflow by dragging it from the Actions list to the workflow area.

STEP 02 - Filter for Picks

The next step is to filter the passed image references to retrieve only the picks. Add the Filter for Picks action to the end of the workflow. This action will examine each of the image versions passed from the previous action and pass on only the picks to the next action.

STEP 03 - Export the Image Versions

The next step is to create new image files from the image versions passed from the previous action. Add the Export Verions action to the end of the workflow and choose an appropriate image type and size for use in a Keynote slideshow.

STEP 04 - Create New Slides in Keynote

Now that the image files have been created, they can be imported into an open Keynote presentation. Click on the Keynote action library icon in the Automator window and add the Picture Sequence from Files action displayed in the Action List to the end of the workflow. This action will create a new slide for each of the image files passed from the previous action.

Choose a slide master to use for the created slides -- Blank works well, but you can use picture-based slide masters if you want to edit the slides by hand.

If you want access to the image file names and various camera and metadata settings of the images, for use while presenting, select the Create Slide Notes... checkbox and then select and re-order metadata attributes from the list of IPTC and EXIF attributes. Their values will appear in the presenter's notes for each slide.

To have instant access to this workflow from within Aperture, choose Save As Plug-in... from the Automator File menu, and select Script Menu from the Plug-in for popup menu. Name the plug-in Export to Keynote and save it. The next time you want to add a sequence of images to an open Keynote slideshow, select them in Aperture and choose Export to Keynote from the Script Menu at the top right of the Aperture menu bar.
